Mindfulness is the practice of becoming more fully aware of the present moment–non-judgmentally and completely–rather than dwelling in the past or projecting into the future. It generally involves a heightened awareness of sensory stimuli (really noticing your breathing, feeling the sensations of your body, etc.) and being “in the now.” While mindfulness has origins in Eastern philosophy and Buddhism, there is no necessary religious component to mindfulness — anyone, with any belief system, can enjoy the benefits of mindfulness.
Mindfulness can be achieved through meditation, but one can also practice mindfulness through daily living. Simply focusing on the present moment and quieting your inner dialogue can help you attain mindfulness.
Mindfulness Meditation is rapidly becoming more popular as an adjunct to traditional medical and psychological therapies.
Mindfulness interventions have been demonstrated to be beneficial for a number of psychological and physical conditions such as chronic pain, depression, anxiety, addictions and personality disorder. Many people notice the benefits of mindfulness in their day to day lives. The practice of mindfulness has been shown to have lasting positive effects with benefits that increase with practice. It has also been shown that after only eight weeks of practice that practitioners have positive changes in the brain function and immune response (Davidson 2003).
Carolien Koreneff is an experienced Somatic (body-oriented) Psychotherapist, Health Coach and seasoned meditator. The group classes that she teaches provide opportunities for people to come together to meditate, practice mindfulness and socialize in a friendly and comfortable environment. Groups are non-religious, non-denominational in approach, and welcome meditators from all backgrounds and traditions to share their expertise. The sessions are suitable for all, including those with little or no meditation experience.
